You are entitled to report your lawyer in case of any ethics violations. Most ethics violations occur due to the following:

-  Non-communication by the lawyer about facts relating to your case

-  Conflict of Interest

-  Misappropriation of funds

-  Inablity of the lawyer to safeguard client’s property

-  Unprofessional behavior

-  Misrepresentaion

In case of these issues, you should report your lawyer to the Lawyer Disciplinary Counsel in your state. Give them a complete description of the events. The information will remain confidential in most cases.

Once you have filed your complaint, your lawyer will be informed about the charges against him. He will have to explain his conduct to the disciplinary committee. Based on his explanation, the committee will decide whether he is guilty or not. If the charges are serious enough, the lawyer will face suspension from his bar association. If not, he will be let off with a warning.

If you are unhappy with your lawyer’s conduct, you can fire him yourself. It can be done even if your case is pending in court. However, you will probably have to take the court’s permission before doing so. You will have to pay the lawyer his fees up to the time he was dismissed.

It is important to know that disciplinary action will not help if your lawyer misappropriated your money. It will only punish the guilty lawyer. But there is no way that the committee can help you in getting back your lost money.
